The return of the family tradition
According to him, Czech is a magical language and has adopted the word nativity scene to refer to gears of figures forming scenes from the Bible and the Gospel. “It’s a return to tradition in our service, because after normalization, the communists banned the display of passion nativity scenes and many were destroyed. Basically, people only know Christmas, which is a shame “said Libor Šedina. That’s why he and his father Karel decided to carve a brand new one for Easter. “And it actually made our dream come true,” he said.

The Nativity scene begins on Sunday in May, when Jesus came to Jerusalem. It depicts the last decade of his life. “What he went through, how he was martyred, crucified, then rose from the dead and appeared for another forty days before ascending to heaven,” the sculptor said.
Sunday in May begins Holy Week, this year it falls on April 10. “We have a family tradition, when my grandfather and my great-grandfather went to church in traditional dress that day, they took a branch with them that they had blessed, and I I did this year. I wore a Blato folk costume and symbolically had the twig blessed, thus officially opening the exhibit to the public,” he mentioned ahead of the opening of the exhibit.
Karel and Libor Sedin they are not only sculptors, but also great collectors. According to museum and gallery experts, their nativity scenes are at a high standard. They display their treasures mainly at Christmas and their collection includes more than 600 nativity scenes from different parts of the country and the world. Karel Šedina has been creating wooden figures almost all his life. He inherited his love of wood and cutting from his grandfather and father, as did his son Libor. In the family, this popular craft has been passed down from father to son for several generations. Grandfather Šedina was even a renowned master sculptor of the last century. He created his works on commission for churches and churches in Šumava and abroad. He saved one of his nativity scenes from passion by hiding it during the war, and in 1968 he dedicated it to the Franciscan order of Bavaria, which still owns it.
The giant installation also includes other paintings, Judas takes a bribe on Ugly Wednesday, followed by Maundy Thursday with the Lord’s Supper, then Jesus washes St. Peter’s feet, walks to the Garden of Gethsemane, where an angel appears to him. “So Judas betrays Jesus with a kiss, the strikers who are going to arrest him will not recognize him, and he will betray him. The whole scene takes place at night in the dark, so there must be bright torches with torches,” Šedina added.

The entire Stations of the Cross
In addition to other scenes, the story continues the traditional Stations of the Cross. “Everyone knows well from the paintings, it is precisely given and contains 14 games. During the journey to Mount Golgotha, Jesus takes up his cross and meets various people, Mother Mary, Saint Veronica and others , a total of three times he falls under his weight due to exhaustion,” he said.
The Sedin also worked in detail on, for example, the hour-long flagellation of Jesus, the crucifixion, the crucifixion itself, the resurrection, the piety, the burial, the fishing on the Sea of Galilee, and the hanging later of the traitor Judas. “Jesus will die six hours after the crucifixion, the death could take up to five days, the murderers were killed to suffer a long time. Stoning was considered a quick death,” Libor Šedina added.
The only one in the Czech Republic
According to the authors, this is the only fasting nativity scene of this size and type in our republic. “The like were displayed in churches until World War I, but almost none have survived to this day,” he lamented.

A figurine measures less than 30 centimeters and it takes a long time to manufacture. “They wear biblical robes and costumes, these details take a long time to carve, we literally dress them in wooden fabrics, we work on a figure for about three days,” concluded the young sculptor.
Additionally, Jesus appears in almost every scene, and facial expressions are also important. “Only about three is not at all. He has a different expression in every scene, sometimes he fights, somewhere he is serious, he sighs in pain and is in pain. We tried to see what the man had to cross,” Šedina said.
The imagination worked
They created the Stations of the Cross according to the paintings, they used their imagination and imagination on the remaining scenes and imagined everything according to the text of the individual gospels of the Bible. “The passion nativity scenes have strict rules, there must be no animals except two – a dog and a donkey. These spiritual stories are popular, for example, in Germany, Austria or northern Italy” , concluded Libor Šedina.
The Passion Nativity Scene can be seen directly in the basement of the house near Šediny until June 5. The exhibition is located at 356 U Stadionu Street, can be visited from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and you can expect a captivating story from the creators themselves. Admission is voluntary. A scene, namely the incredulous Thomas, was also placed by sculptors on White Saturday on the altar of the Church of St. Matěj on TGM Square.
With a Passion or Lent nativity scene we meet only exceptionally under Czech conditions. They are painted in the city museum in Ústí nad Orlicí or in Svitavy. The nativity scene, as it is also called, tells the story of the suffering of Jesus Christ. There are also famous biblical places such as Jerusalem, Mount Golgotha or the Garden of Gethsemane. Each character has its place and its attitude, and their placement has a strict order. It shouldn’t be called the Nativity Scene, as the biblical story takes place in Jerusalem, but the designation is likely retained due to the time sequence of the Christmas Nativity scene, the three kings, and possibly the ground floor. pavement.
