The relationship between poor teeth cleaning and heart disease – scientists advise the best care

According to the results of studies, insufficient dental care can lead not only to tooth decay and gingivitis, but also to type 2 diabetes, various types of heart disease or cancer. What is the most effective prevention?

The idea that bacteria or inflammatory chemicals released by immune cells in the gums can enter the bloodstream and affect the well-being of other tissues or organs is not new. Already Hippocrates attributed the case of the cure of arthritis to the extraction of a diseased tooth. Much later, in 1900, British physician William Hunter proposed his theory of focal infections of the teeth and gums that can cause disease in other parts of the body.

Who is the main culprit of the problem
As the prestigious British journal The Guardian reports on its website, research on this issue has been intensive to date. Especially in the last 10 years, there has been an explosion of new knowledge linking oral health to diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

The most likely cause is chronic inflammation, which travels through the body from the mouth, similar to a wound or a flare-up of an infected splinter in the thumb. “Inflammation appears to be associated with a far greater number of diseases than we traditionally thought,” Francis Hughes, professor of periodontology at King’s College London, told The Guardian.

Why brushing your teeth is so important
By cleaning, we strip teeth of plaque, which is a sticky mixture of bacteria and waste products they excrete. Some bacteria that live there produce acid that disrupts tooth enamel and causes tooth decay. Other types of bacteria can cause gingivitis. It manifests in the early stages of bleeding when brushing the teeth, the untreated form can progress to periodontitis, when the gums are torn from the tooth, allowing bacteria to grow in this newly created pocket. What can cause such inflammation?

1. Heart disease
The strongest link found to date between oral health and the rest of the body concerns heart and vascular disease. In 2007, Professor Francesco D’Aiuto of the Eastman Dental Institute in London published an article in the New England Journal of Medicine suggesting that thorough brushing of the teeth and gums under local anesthesia improves flexibility and arterial health. , six months after surgery. . This reduces the risk of atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries, threatening the heart.

2. Diabetes of the second type
There is also evidence of a direct link to diabetes. In May 2015, D’Aiuto published a study in PLoS One magazine evaluating the impact of gum disease treatment on people with type 2 diabetes. He concluded that gum treatment reduced overall levels of inflammation, which can lead to low blood sugar levels in diabetics.

3. Cancer
Chronic inflammation is also one of the options for increasing the likelihood of carcinogenic mutations and promoting cell division, Professor Hughes told the Guardian. Because plaque bacteria are implicated in inflammation and gum disease can reduce the immune system’s ability to recognize and destroy cancer cells.
