Cooking is supposed to be a joy, and I cry! No more, I can’t live this anymore! Not a single tear! You don’t stop cooking, you just dry your eyes, wipe your nose and go to the supermarket for Sunions.

For decades, American plant breeder Rick Watson has been trying to grow an onion you won’t cry to grow, even if you don’t put on “onion proof” glasses.

So can we forget all the tricks, like using ski goggles, snorkeling masks, slicing under running water or strong ventilation? Yes, we certainly can!

However, Sunions won’t just make you cry for free, they’ll wreak havoc. It has lost its distinctive aroma and taste and is sweeter. However, it definitely has its place on the kitchen shelf. And don’t cry.

In the United States, tearless onions began to be grown and sold four years ago. Named Sunions, it began selling in Britain in select Waitrose stores and supermarkets under the same name in January this year.

It is imported from Spain. So far it’s a little more expensive, a bundle of four onions costs about nine crowns more than red onions. However, when you compare the higher costs with perfectly destroyed makeup, the amount is negligible.

Onions, tears and art

Before I start cooking, I won’t forgive myself a little cultural onion insert. If anyone thinks that using onions only impacts your kitchens and TV shows that show how onions are cut at lightning speed, they are wrong. Onions also have a place in literature, and I’m talking to Pablo Neruda, a Chilean poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature, who is said to have borrowed his name from our poet Jan Neruda.

About the onion, which does not cry and about which I write, the poet’s confession loses its meaning. Onions often serve as a camouflage for our mental state and the new one is simply not suitable.

In many songs, tears fall on the innocent onion after breaking up with a partner, often even because of a sad story, bad memories or events. I will randomly recall the lyricist Pavel Vrba, who wrote beautiful lyrics for Waldemar Matuška in a wise song Žít, jen žít:

“I also met you
who cried the world,
on the futility of life and God knows what
I always asked them: why are you crying for onions?
Their lamentations seemed to me equally vain and meaningless. »

In some ways the author is right. However, from our point of view, who cannot imagine cooking without onions, our tears are not meaningless.

On the contrary, we will prepare such delicacies that will ultimately evoke smiles, satisfaction and well-being. Aren’t those few tears worth it? As always, that’s the correct answer. The important thing is that we can forgive our tears, that we have the possibility of not crying thanks to the breed onion. But we are also losing something. After all, it’s wonderful when we’re crying for an onion and our significant other comes, hugs us tenderly and whispers in our ear, “Don’t cry, baby, don’t cry.”

Unions or our yellow onions?

I leave it to you to cook which onion, although I have the impression that the “without tears” is not yet sold in the Czech Republic. But he will definitely come and you can, for example, prepare a tasty salad or an onion, over which you will not cry, even if only his name brings tears to someone.

But before I start cooking without tears, I would ask a breeder if he could devote himself to the beet so that it does not stain and that I do not look like a “heroine” of bad horror with red hands after the have transformed.
