Gazdík after the machete attack: The training center did not show abnormal problems, it is necessary to think about the iROZHLAS executives

Czech education has one of the most tragic days behind it. On Thursday, in a school on Ohradní Street, a student attacked his teacher with a machete right in his office. The educator succumbed to his injuries instantly, the alleged 19-year-old apprentice found himself in a major police operation in a holding cell. “In general, the aggressiveness of children is increasing. Social networks, computer games, but the coronavirus are to blame,” Education Minister Petr Gazdík (STAN) says in an interview with Radiožurnál.

What could or could the ministry do to prevent such situations?
The department has taken action in the past. Past violent crime situations have been that most times someone broke into the school. School safety has improved considerably since then. Unfortunately, the situation we have here – that a pupil murders his teacher – is the first in the history of Czech education.

We have to analyze it. Find out why this happened. Covid-19 and the loss of certain social ties during distance learning certainly play a role. We live in a time when war is raging near our borders and there is more unrest in society, but also the psychological problems of the students.

Should there be more security for schools – for example, controlling students who go to school? Are frames in schools or other security measures the solution?
Yesterday, the first questions from your fellow journalists were raised whether everyone coming to school had to go through the frame. We analyze measurement – what would bring, what would take away. Of course, that wouldn’t mean entirely minimal costs and not entirely minimal problems getting into the schools. On the other hand, what happened yesterday with the machete, where you have various educational tools, can happen with another subject, and I don’t know if that would be the solution.

Did the ministry have information from the school inspectorate on the problems at this school?
This was not the case. According to our information, the school is working well. Coincidentally, me and the director, who is the president of the Apprenticeship Association, had a working breakfast with the other 15 associations yesterday morning. From my point of view, the school is not badly managed. We cannot say that it has abnormal problems compared to other schools of this type.

You mentioned the possibility of giving teachers civil servant status, which would make them more protected by law. However, in the case of students under the age of 18, it would not have such an effect, more so for parents. Does this mean that student aggression is somehow increasing in all areas and needs to be addressed centrally?
In general, children’s aggression increases at all levels. Social networks, the Internet, spending a lot of time on computer games, few contacts in the past, for example because of covid-19, few social contacts with friends, with other people, can have these consequences.

As a ministry, we are thinking about it, the operational program Jan Amos Komenský has already been prepared. Up to 4.3 billion crowns will go to him to create a network of school psychologists, specialized pedagogues, teaching assistants. Be the people who are in school as a team, so that it is not like every time the measure has ended in the past by the educational and psychological counseling center or by the European Union money, the person just left in the middle of the year and the valuable experience and knowledge of the environment that he had, they left with him.

We would like to change that. In the near future, the law on teaching staff will come to the Chamber of Deputies, which is now in an interministerial comment procedure, and of course this situation will be dealt with.

I am sincerely shocked by the news of the violent death of a high school teacher from Prague. I hope the police will investigate this heinous act as soon as possible and that the culprit will be duly punished. I would like to express my sincere condolences to the teacher’s family, as well as my support to his colleagues and students.
