The cost-effective conceptual solution of investment projects and the maximum effort to satisfy customers’ ideas is the main goal of each order. How to combine digital prototyping techniques and advanced software tools with initial designs and ideas? Let’s look at one of the interesting projects that have arisen in education in high schools and high schools in Žďár nad Sázavou. The main objective was to familiarize our young technicians with the methodology of solving the functional design of buildings and to present the possibilities of modern strategies in the field of project solutions. We wanted to emphasize the possibilities of using BIM data in conjunction with a clear presentation of the project as such.

BIM tools are the basis for the functional design of buildings

The 3D prototype and the complete digital description of the project data bring a number of advantages, including the possibility of detecting errors at the earliest possible stage of the project. These strategies are known as functional design methods, especially in the world of industrial software and PLM. The project itself focuses in its initial phases more on the nature and use of the final solution. It is thus possible, at the level of the initial 3D study, to reconcile the ideas of the investor with the ideas of the production team. If we add to this challenge the possibility of dealing with problem analyzes based on calculation and simulation algorithms, we obtain very interesting working procedures.

Individual digital tools in the field of construction and architecture are available within the framework of the creation of a building information model. Through the effective use of 3D data, we find ourselves on the imaginary life cycle solution curve of the building in a situation where we are able to define the basic utility value of the building as its investment at a early stage of the project. This avoids unnecessary guesswork, time wasted on complex construction, and additional troubleshooting costs.

Functional design of buildings as a synthesis of ideas and solutions

The advantage of the current generation of entry-level technicians is the availability of suitable software tools. Essentially, a young high school student receives advanced technology in full-fledged licenses used in technical practice. It’s just a matter of how to use it. At school, we created a project for students based on a relatively easy assignment. The purpose of the project was to realize his own ideas about the future housing. This was a project solved mainly with students who already mastered the basics of working with PLM and BIM applications and had an idea of ​​the principles of processing digital prototypes as such. We have provided students with professional school software in the form of student licenses from the Autodesk 2020 product line and the possibility of ongoing consultation of the problem in the team.

The project’s task was to present its visions and ideas for future housing in the most effective form possible. Each student had the opportunity to approach the problem individually according to their ideas. We mainly fixed the debugging of individual solutions procedures and individual applications of software tools. The basic requirement of the project was the emphasis on the utility value and functionality of the building. Students were given the opportunity to use virtually any tool from Autodesk’s production workshop. In the end, we focused mainly on processing the building information model using BIM tools in Autodesk Revit and applying visualization procedures in conjunction with virtual reality.

Project resolution process and its presentation

During the development of the project, the students proceeded with regard to the temporal possibilities of teaching in several basic blocks. The first phase of the project focused on creating simple sketches and sketches of the future solution of residential and possibly utility spaces. In this field, we started from the hypothesis of a family living in a house which should best respond to the ideas of each student individually. After creation and consultation, students were asked to prepare a main building information model in Autodesk Revit 2020. The BIM model was based on a feature family model that allows you to unify the working environment of the project. Of course, when creating the model, it was possible to optimize the entire design process both in terms of creating the model and in terms of modifying the solution concept.

We dedicated the end of the project to the presentation of individual proposals. The students had carte blanche in the field of visual studies processing whose task was to present the created BIM data as clearly as possible. Autodesk’s product line has a strong track record, ranging from simpler software features built directly into applications to powerful visualization and animation solutions used in the film industry, for example. As an example, we chose a project developed by Bohumil Ambrož, which was created by combining dynamic visualization techniques with virtual reality methods. The visual study of the 3D construction data was then slightly modified programmatically for the application of the HTC Vive Pro headset, which we use at school to process VR studies.
